Colin Sweeney was born and educated in Hobart. He studied drawing and photography at the University of Tasmania, before moving to Sydney and studying at the Julian Ashton Art School.

Colin’s first exhibition was held at the Thelma Ferris Gallery in Potts Point Sydney in 1991. The following year was spent studying at the renowned Julian Ashton School of Arts, the initiating aim was to develop the more traditional skills of representational drawing and painting. These classes provided the underpinnings for the more explorative nature of Colin’s future development.

It was in the move to Cairns North Queensland, that experimentation became the corner stone of Colin’s art practice. A youthful exuberance in Cairns art scene centered around a vibrant Contemporary Art Group, KickArts provided the impetus to produce new and inventive works. Moving between a variety of media – assemblage sculpture, printmaking and painting, Colin rejoiced in the freedom of new thoughts and changing materials.

Now based on the Gold Coast Colin continues to investigate new directions through a layered process involving the pouring of colour drenched varnish. Through this luscious fluid technique Colin explores the plasticity of the ever changing environment in both micro and macro focus. He sees this primordial soup of life as a coalescence of chemicals, colours and shapes.

Colin’s art is increasingly sought after by collectors, and his artworks hang in many private collections.
